More than a buzzword: the importance of self-care

Practicing self-care will help you manage stress and improve your overall well-being. We explore the importance of self-care, along with 5 easy self-care tips.

By definition, self-care is the act of attending to your physical or mental health, or the products or practices used to comfort or soothe yourself.

Practicing self-care will help you manage your stressors and improve your overall well-being—and we’re to tell you it doesn’t need to be difficult, time-consuming or costly!

Why self-care is important

Self-care takes care of your entire being—mind, body and soul—which is why it’s important to work it into your daily life. In addition to relieving the pressures of everyday life and preventing burnout, it can also lead to positive physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual benefits like:

  • reduced stress
  • increased mental clarity
  • improved physical health
  • a boost to your emotional resilience
  • better relationships (romantic, friendship, work, etc.)
  • improved productivity (not decreased, like some may assume)

5 easy self-care tips

Self-care looks a little different for everyone, but it’s easy to integrate self-care practices into your routine:

  1. Schedule time with yourself. It’s hard to think about adding one more item to the old to-do list, but make time for yourself every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Pick up the latest bestseller or your journal, engage in your favourite hobby or burn off some steam with a brisk walk or workout—whatever brings you joy!
  2. Practice gratitude. According to Harvard, in positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly associated with greater happiness. Bringing more positivity into your thought processes can be therapeutic. Creating a list of what you’re grateful for can work wonders.
  3. Say no and set boundaries. If your plate is getting full (and even if it isn’t), setting boundaries will make sure you don’t get overwhelmed with too many demands of your time and energy.
  4. Live in the moment. It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of daily life—trust us, we get it! Take a moment to pause (and a few deep breaths) to centre yourself. You can also try incorporating mindfulness or meditation exercises into your routine.
  5. It sounds obvious, but make healthy choices. Work nutritious foods into your meals, drink lots of water, take your vitamins, engage in physical activity every day and aim for a solid night’s sleep. We know, we know—it can be hard to do it all! Aim for small changes that you will be more likely to maintain in the long run, and be consistent until new habits are formed.

Practicing self-care isn’t selfish or a luxury. Think of it as an investment in your health and well-being! By incorporating some of these practices into your daily life, you’ll feel renewed and rejuvenated.
