4 tips to help you tackle dry winter skin

Dry skin got you down? At Sanctuary Day Spa, it’s one of our most common client complaints. We’ve compiled four tips to help you tackle dry, itchy or irritated skin this winter.

Dry skin got you down?

While many people experience dry skin year-round, the winter months can lead to even more dryness and irritation, thanks to frigid temperatures, changes in humidity and wind.

At Sanctuary Day Spa, dry skin is one of our most common client complaints. While regular facial treatments can help, you can also follow these tips to tackle dry, itchy skin between visits.

Four ways you can treat dry skin at home

  1. Healthy, hydrated skin starts from the inside! Drink lots of water throughout the. If plain water isn’t your thing, add fresh herbs or a slice of lemon for a spa-like experience at home.
  2. Avoid long, hot showers or baths. We know, we know—it’s hard not to during those frigid days! But hot water can damage the skin’s surface and strip it of its natural oils, leading to dryness.
  3. Keep your skin nice and supple by investing in a humidifier if your home is especially dry or if you’ve cranked your indoor heating. It will help replenish some of the moisture in the air.
  4. Amp up your moisturizing routine with the right products, which will rehydrate your skin and prevent further water loss. You’ll likely need to modify your skincare routine with a thicker or cream-based moisturizer.

According to Medical News Today, different moisturizing products serve different purposes: some help attract moisture to the skin (like humectants), while some fill in spaces between skin cells where there has been a loss of moisture (like emollients). Others help seal moisture and form a protective barrier. Our staff are happy to walk through your current skincare routine and provide recommendations based on your skin’s specific concerns.

Finally, apply body moisturizer when you’re right out of the shower, and make sure to lock in moisture on your face with the appropriate products. (And don’t forget to apply sunscreen every day—yes, even in the winter!)
