5 skincare mistakes you’re probably making

We’ve outlined five skincare mistakes you may be making—and how to fix them.

Even with the best intentions, we may make skincare mistakes that hinder our attempts for healthy, glowing skin. (Hey, we’re human, after all!)

We’ve outlined five skincare mistakes you may be making—and how to fix them.

1.     Over-exfoliating.

Exfoliation is an essential step in any skincare routine, as it helps remove dead skin cells. But, if you’re exfoliating too often—or using a product that’s too harsh for your skin type—you may experience irritation, redness or even breakouts.

Limit exfoliation to two or three times a week (depending on the product) and choose a gentle exfoliant suited for your skin type.

2.     Skipping the SPF.

UV exposure is a major cause of premature aging and dark spots—not to mention the risk of skin cancer. Even on cloudy days or when you’re indoors, your skin may be exposed to the sun’s harmful rays.

Always, always, always (we cannot stress this enough) include sunscreen in your skincare routine. We’ve outlined some of our favourite sun care products in a recent blog post. Don’t forget to apply it to your neck, ears and hands, too!

3.     Using dirty tools or hands.

Stop. Touching. Your. Face. We know, it’s a hard habit to break; on average, humans touch their faces around 23 times an hour.

It’s also tempting to pop that pimple or pick at a scab, but doing so can lead to scarring, infections and more breakouts.  Think about all of the bacteria and dirt your hands encounter daily: touching your phone, door handles, etc. Yuck!

Keep your hands off your face and let blemishes heal naturally. If you must intervene, use a spot treatment and resist the urge to pick.

Similarly, dirty makeup brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria, potentially leading to clogged pores, breakouts and even infections. Wash your brushes at least once a week with a gentle cleanser or brush cleaner.

4.     Sleeping with your makeup on.

Do you feel personally called out? We’ve all done it!

Leaving makeup on overnight can clog pores, cause breakouts and even accelerate aging.

Makeup removal should be part of your nightly wind-down routine. Keep makeup wipes on your bedside table for those nights when you’re too tired for a full cleanse.

5.     Not meeting your hydration needs.

Dehydrated skin can look dull and flaky, and is more prone to wrinkles. While moisturizing is essential (even if you have oily skin), it’s not enough if you’re not drinking enough water throughout the day.

Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water daily and incorporate hydrating foods like cucumbers and watermelon into your diet. Use a hydrating serum or moisturizer to lock in moisture and keep your skin plump and healthy.

BONUS tip: Neglecting your neck and décolletage.

When applying skincare products, remember your neck and décolletage, both of which are prone to aging and sun damage. Include these areas when you’re applying moisturizer, anti-aging products or sunscreen.

It’s easy to make these skincare mistakes, but with these tips, you’ll be on your way to more radiant skin.
