Summer is full of sun and fun—but thanks to heat, sun exposure and the drying effects of air conditioning, the season can also be tough on your skin.

We’re celebrating National Hydration Day on June 23, and proper hydration is essential for maintaining a healthy, glowing complexion all summer.

4 tips to keep your skin hydrated and happy this summer

Drink lots of water.

Hydration starts from within. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help maintain your skin’s moisture, and make sure to drink even more if you’re exercising or spending time in the sun.

If you find it hard to drink enough water, carry a reusable water bottle with you so you can sip throughout the day, or set reminders on your phone. You can also try adding fruits, veggies and herbs to your water pitcher for a spa-like experience.

Similarly, incorporate hydrating foods like cucumber, watermelon and berries into your diet, all of which have high water content and provide vitamins and antioxidants that support skin health.

Review your current skincare products.

Depending on your skin’s needs, you may want to switch to a lightweight moisturizer during the summer (vs. heavier creams in the winter).

Incorporating a hydrating serum into your routine can also help boost your skin’s hydration. Apply it before your moisturizer to maximize moisture retention and keep your skin supple. A hydrating facial mist is also a great way to add a bit more moisture! Spritz generously on your skin whenever you need a pick-me-up.

Finally, avoid harsh exfoliants. While exfoliation is important for removing dead skin cells and allowing your moisturizer to penetrate more effectively, over-exfoliating can lead to irritation and dryness. Avoid harsh scrubs and opt for chemical exfoliants that are milder on the skin, keeping it smooth, hydrated and irritation-free.

Protect your skin from the sun.

Skip the hot water.

Hot showers and using hot water when washing your face can strip skin of its natural oils, leading to excessive dryness. Limit your showers to a few minutes and opt for lukewarm water.
