How to care for your skin after a facial

If you want to prolong your post-facial glow, there are ways you can care for your skin at home to help maintain your skin’s health between facial appointments.

Picture this: You walk out of Sanctuary Day Spa, still feeling like you’re floating after a blissful, relaxing facial. Your skin has never looked or felt better. You’re glowing!

If you want to prolong that amazing feeling, there are ways to care for your skin at home to maintain your skin’s health between facial appointments:

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Maximize the benefits of your facial by drinking lots of water—hydrated skin starts from the inside! If plain water isn’t your thing, add fresh herbs or a slice of lemon for a spa-like experience at home.

Treat your skin gently.

Your skin is especially sensitive after a facial. Wash your face with lukewarm water and use gentle cleansing products and moisturizers to nourish and replenish it. You should also avoid exfoliants and potent products like retinols, peels, toners and (most) face masks for a few days after your facial so you don’t damage your skin’s barrier and encourage inflammation.

After a facial, your skin may purge as it recovers. Keep your hands off your face, no matter how tempting it might be to pick! Picking acne, blackheads and other blemishes can cause irritation and even scarring.

Avoid irritants.

Put down the heavy makeup and skincare products! Give your skin a moment to breathe and repair itself after your facial treatment. Wash makeup brushes before using them (which you should be doing regularly anyway!), and change your pillowcase and towels to avoid breakouts.

Similarly, avoid situations that promote heat and sweat like saunas/steam rooms, massages and workouts—all of which can irritate your freshly exfoliated skin—for a few days. Ditto for sun exposure, since your skin will be more susceptible to sun damage after a facial. If you must spend time outdoors, wear sunscreen and a hat to shade your face (yes, even in the winter).

Invest in a quality routine.

A good skincare routine doesn’t need to be expensive! By invest, we mean invest your time in good skincare practices that will help you maintain your glow and the facial’s benefits in the long run. Talk to your esthetician or a member of our team about your skincare concerns and goals to help bring your everyday routine to the next level. They’ll be happy to provide recommendations on products and treatments.

As part of your routine, you should:

  • Exfoliate regularly (but not too often). Again, don’t exfoliate right after your facial—but exfoliation should be a key step in your skincare routine going forward. Not only will it help keep your skin soft, but it will slough away impurities and prevent the build-up of dead skin.
  • Incorporate a vitamin C product. At Sanctuary Day Spa, vitamin C is one of our absolute favourite ingredients to help hydrate, brighten, smooth out wrinkles, promote collagen production and protect against environmental damage. Whether you’re looking for smoother skin or a more youthful glow, this wonder vitamin should be an essential part of your skincare routine. Check out our Vital C Facial, perfect for those with rosacea, or dry, dehydrated, aging or sun-damaged skin.

Book your next facial.

At minimum, we recommend booking quarterly facials to coincide with the change in seasons. If you’re experiencing dry, dull skin due to pollution, smoking or stress, we recommend our Detoxygene Facial, which detoxifies and allows your skin to breathe—a great way to kick off a new facial routine!

By following these tips, you’ll be able to keep your skin happy, bright and clear for the long haul.
