What you need to know about vitamin C

Vitamin C products can help you achieve radiant, healthy-looking skin. Find out the skincare benefits of vitamin C and how to incorporate it into your routine.

National Vitamin C Day is right around the corner!

With its antioxidant properties that help transform your skin, vitamin C remains one of our favourite skincare ingredients. Find out why it’s become a staple in our skincare routines and how you can incorporate it into yours.

Skincare benefits of vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerhouse vitamin in skincare. It brightens and evens skin tone, helping to reduce redness and fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It stimulates collagen production and promotes firmer, more youthful skin, while enhancing your skin’s barrier to lock in moisture.

It also complements your sunscreen and shields against environmental aggressors, such as pollution and UV radiation, which can lead to premature aging and skin damage.

Bonus: It’s safe for most skin types.

How to incorporate vitamin C into your skincare routine

1. Choose the right product for your skin type.

Look for serums, moisturizers and treatments with a concentration of around 10 to 20 per cent vitamin C for optimal results. Serums are typically the most common vitamin C product, designed to be used as a layer in your skincare routine.

We love IMAGE Skincare’s ILUMA intense brightening serum, packed with vitamin C and bearberry leaf extract to diminish dullness, improve the appearance of dark spots and promote radiant, even-toned skin. The IMAGE MD restoring power-C serum is another must-have. The high-performance serum has been clinically proven to improve wrinkles, pigmentation and firmness.

2. Apply on clean skin.

As with any skincare product, ensure your face is cleansed so it can better absorb any subsequent products. After cleansing (and toning, if that’s part of your routine), apply a few drops of serum to your fingertips and gently massage into your skin. Allow it to fully absorb before moving on to the next steps of your routine, like moisturizing, eye cream or sunscreen.

While you can use vitamin C products in the morning or evening, morning use is important as it provides enhanced protection against UV damage in conjunction with your sunscreen. (Don’t ever forget to use SPF, even in winter months or on cloudy days!)

3. Use it consistently.

Always test any new products when incorporating them into your routine to make sure your skin doesn’t react negatively.

Consistency is key when it comes to seeing results from a new product, so use it consistently for optimal results. It may take time to see visible results, but you should eventually start to see improvements in your skin tone, texture and radiance.

4. Store vitamin C products properly.

Vitamin C is sensitive to light, air and heat, which can cause it to degrade and lose effectiveness over time. Keep it sealed and store it in a cool, dark, dry place and never in direct sunlight. If the colour changes or becomes cloudy, it has already oxidized.
