Lotions and creams and serums—oh my!
When it comes to moisturizers, the range of products can be, well, overwhelming! Plus, they all serve distinct purposes and are formulated differently to address various skincare issues.
Understanding these differences can help you choose the right products for YOUR skin type and concerns. We’ve broken down some of the most common types of moisturizing products to help you make your skincare routine the most effective possible!
Lotions
Lotions are lightweight moisturizers with a higher water content, typically a mix of water and tiny droplets of oil. They absorb right into the skin, making them ideal for daily use and perfect for hydrating without leaving a greasy residue. Plus, they’re great for those who are prone to clogged pores.
Creams
Creams are thicker and richer than lotions due to their higher oil content. They provide a more substantial barrier, which helps lock in moisture and keep the skin hydrated longer. This makes them ideal for dry or mature skin types that require more intense hydration, or at nighttime when the skin repairs itself.
Gels
Gels are lightweight, refreshing and water-based formulations. They absorb quickly into the skin, making them ideal for oily, combination and acne-prone skin types. They hydrate without adding any oil or heavy residue (no shine here!).
Serums
Serums are highly concentrated formulas that deliver active ingredients deep into the skin. Typically water- or oil-based, they have a lighter consistency than creams and don’t leave a greasy residue. Serums can target specific skin concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots or acne. Apply them before other moisturizing products for the best results.
Oils
Hydrating the skin’s upper layer, facial oils help to protect and strengthen its natural barrier, locking in hydration and providing essential fatty acids. Suitable for all skin types, oils can help balance oil production, and can also take the place of a moisturizer (unlike serums).
Balms
Balms are thick, solid formulations that melt upon contact with heat or skin. They’re intensely nourishing and protective, making them perfect for extremely dry, sensitive or irritated skin—great for our harsh Canadian winters or sun damage in the summer. They can also target dry patches, soothe chapped lips or serve as an overnight treatment for intensive hydration.
From gels to balms, each type of moisturizing product has a unique role in maintaining healthy, radiant skin. Whether you’re looking to hydrate, treat or protect your skin, the right combination of products can help you achieve your goals.
